Boyd-Clowes: 4-Hills is a dream

Boyd-Clowes: 4-Hills is a dream

Last summer young Canadian Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes could attract some attention with his good results. The athlete from Calgary won two FIS Cups, was on the podium in the Continental Cup and was 13th in the Summer Grand Prix in Courchevel.

These are the best results of a Canadian ski jumper for a long time. Despite these good performances Boyd-Clowes didn’t take part in an international competition so far this winter and will make his first appearance this season at the 4-Hills-Tournament. A reason for that are problems during the preparation earlier this winter.

“One month ago in November I think we had more jumps on snow than any other team in the world. Then, due to some bad luck in Calgary with the weather and the hill preparations, we haven’t taken one jump since December 2nd. It should be interesting to see how well mentally prepared Mackenzie is”, head coach Gregor Linsig explained to FISskijumping.com.

“I’m ready to have fun”

“We didn’t have enough early snow training in Calgary, so this will be my first jumps for December. But just like in the Summer Grand Prix, I’ll be ready to have some fun”, told Boyd-Clowes and the results this year give him self-confidence.

“Courchevel showed myself and Team Canada that our program is working and we can be in the hunt, that was an incredible feeling. We are working on building up, gaining World Cup spots for more of our talented athletes and focusing on the goal of Sochi 2014″, the 20-year-old said to FISskijumping.com.

4-Hills-Tournament is a dream

Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes will take part at the 4-Hills-Tournament for the first time, a special moment for the Canadian. “The 4-Hills is a dream. It’s what we all look forward to growing up since we were little seven year old ski jumpers all over the world. I’m focused on my performance, but hope to look back on an amazing experience at this historic event.”

At the 4-Hills-Tournament Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes will be the only Canadian competitor, but this shall change in the future. “I do plan to introduce some jumpers, like Eric Mitchell into the World Cup later on this season. Let’s wait and see how January goes first”, said Linsig.

“A breakthrough performance for men’s team in France”

Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes jumped 128.0 meters and 120.5 meters to place 13th in Courchevel, France. Thomas Morgenstern current World Champion won the event.

Mackienzie Places 10th in Einsiedeln SUI qualification round, Competition takes place Aug 14th.

“Mackenzie is in top form at the moment,” head coach Gregor Linsig said. “This has to give him confidence leading into other World Cups.

“It’s been a while since we have gotten a result like this — it can only motivate the younger jumpers in the program to see that Canadians can ski jump and compete with the best in the world”

The last time a Canadian finished in the top-15 in World Cup Grand Prix Ski Jumping, Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes wasn’t even born. Today in Courcheval France, Boyd-Clowes, 20, finished 13th in Canada’s best finish since Horst Bulau 20 years ago in 1991.

Boyd-Clowes has trained out of Canada Olympic Park in Calgary since he was 7 years old and it has been a long climb to reach the point where he can fly with the best of the world.

Over the last 20 years, since the days of Horst Bulau, Canada’s ski jumping team all but disappeared and support has been cut again and again. Mackenzie has shown remarkable determination through the hard times and with every season he is laying down improved results. Already this season he has had two firsts in the lower level FIS Cup where he is ranked first overall and a second and a forth on the Continental Cup circuit where he is ranked 10th overall.

“It is success on the World Cup level that counts for funding purposes and exposure on the World Cup level – in Europe millions follow ski jumping on TV – that counts for sponsorship dollars. The Canadian ski jumping community is ecstatic with Mackenzie’s successes and our young Canadian jumpers are starting to believe that they can do it too.” Says Brent Morrice, Head of Ski Jumping Canada.

Fellow National team athlete Eric Mitchell, 18, won a FIS Cup last week in Poland and the other two National team jumpers, Matthew Rowley, 17, and Dusty Korek, 16. have been finishing in the top-twenty ion the FIS Cup circuit this season. These are respectable finishes for such young jumpers and coach Gregor Linsig is justifiably proud of his team.

“This is just the start of many good results to come. Right now, I couldn’t be a happier guy. I’m proud of Mackenzie and what he has proven today.”

Last week Mackenzie won and now me, that’s a good sign for Canada. We began to take the sport more seriously and now that shows in the results.” Eric also placed 11th, 9th & 11th in the 3 other FIS Cups putting him 3rd in the Overall Ranking for the Summer FIS Cup Series behind Mackenzie who is leading.
