Alex Loutitt Flies to Fifth at World Cup in Switzerland

December 21, 2024 Uncategorized

ENGELBERG, Sui.—Alex Loutitt landed just shy of her first podium of the year after flying to fifth spot on Saturday at the World Cup in Engelberg, Switzerland.

The 20-year-old ski jumping ace jumped to a total of 254.4 points on the large hill where she finished second one year ago.

The natural-born leaper from Calgary, who qualified in second place, was sitting in sixth spot after her first launch off the HS140 hill. The big-hill jumper climbed one more spot in the standings after soaring to the third best jump of the second heat. Loutitt scored points of 132.9 and 121.5.

Slovenia’s Nika Prevc took top spot on the women’s podium with 283.4 points. Germany’s Katharina Schmid soared to the silver medal with 272.5 points, while Norway’s Thea Minyan Bjoerseth landed on the bronze-medal step of the podium with 267.3 points.

Hills are measured by the average spot where jumpers are expected to land safely, or where the hill flattens. A normal hill is usually 90 metres and the large hill is 120 metres. Jumps are scored on both distance and style. The women’s large hill competition will make its Olympic debut at the 2026 Games in Milano/Cortina.

Loutitt also had two Canadian teammates rocketing off the large hill in Switzerland on Saturday.

Calgary’s Abigail Strate battled to 21st on Saturday with 206.7 points. Nicole Maurer, also of Calgary, was solid in 24th spot at 195.5.

The World Cup continues on Sunday in Engelberg, Switzerland with another large hill competition.
