Team Selection and Training Group Criteria
In order to compete at the world level, athletes must be in peak physical condition. In Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined this includes such elements as physical ability (dryland), technical jump ability, BMI, competition knowledge and expertise. As the worlds of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined evolve and move forward, every element of an athlete’s technical ability, equipment, and physical condition will become more and more important. Podium results are the ultimate goal in all sports and Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined in Canada is no exception.
Selection – Current Athletes
To retain your spot on your current team athletes must:
- Maintain BMI: athlete may be tested at any time during training or competitive season, height used for purpose of test will be FIS height of current height whichever is greater.
- Attend all required team and individual workshops
- Be in good standing with the NSF and Code of Conduct / Athlete charter
- Attend all required regular training times to the minimum standard of (injury and sickness times excluded):
- National Development team: 95%
- National Team: 99%
- Meet training expectations and execute training plan at home when not traveling with the team by:
- Maintaining a daily training log – on-line as available
- Being in contact with the designated at home coach
- Be able to train at current group level
- Not be a distraction or negative influence to the team, training group, or other athletes within the program
If an athlete is unable to meet the physical, technical, or mental requirements of their current team, the athlete may be demoted to lower team / training group at discretion of coach.
Selection – New Athletes
National Development Team – Up to 5 athletes – Grade 9+ (Sport School or Home School Recommended)
- 95% Attendance at regular planned training
- Sign and adhere to Code of Conduct
Ski Jumping Special Jumpers: Men
- BMI: min 20.5
- One of the following between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of current year:
- 1 FIS Cup point (European Race)
- 1 FIS Cup point and within 80% of top 3 skier’s average at same competition (North American FIS Cup)
- Within 85% of top 3 average at Springer Competition – best day of 2 competitions if applicable
- SJ Technical – must get at least 9/10 on each element
- Proper inrun position: 1-10
- IMO: 1-10
- Flight Position: 1-10
- Landing: 1-10
- Take-off: 1-10
- Roller IMO (caught): 1-10
- Dryland – must pass all elements
- Agility test (Delorme goalie test)
- Flexibility test – sit n’reach (-10 min.): P/fail
- Shin angle (45 degrees min): P/F
- Hurdle Hop: x5 in control, hip height to -15cm from hip variable hurdle height, 1.5m apart, continuous – men: P/F
- Standing Long Jump: 145% of height min. : P/F
- Double Leg Hop: >average % than standing long jump: P/F
- Vertical Jump (squat, no arms): 23% height: P/F
- Leger Test: min. Level 9 P/F
Ski Jumping Special Jumpers: Women
- BMI: min 20.5
- One of the following between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of current year:
- 1 Continental Cup point (European Race)
- 1 Continental Cup point and within 80% of top 3 skier’s average at same competition (North American Continental Cup)
- Within 80% of top 3 average at Springer Competition – best day of 2 competitions if applicable
- SJ Technical – must get at least 9/10 on each element
- Proper inrun position: 1-10
- IMO: 1-10
- Flight Position: 1-10
- Landing: 1-10
- Take-off: 1-10
- Roller IMO (caught): 1-10
- Dryland – must pass all elements
- Agility test (Delorme goalie test)
- Flexibility test – sit n’reach (-10 min.): P/fail
- Shin angle (45 degrees min): P/F
- Hurdle Hop: x5 in control, -10cm from hip height to -20cm from hip variable hurdle height, 1.5m apart, continuous – women: P/F
- Standing Long Jump: 135% of height min. : P/F
- Double Leg Hop: >average % than standing long jump: P/F
- Vertical Jump (squat, no arms): 18% height: P/F
- Leger Test: min. Level 9 P/F
National Team – Ski Jumping – 2 Male athletes and 4 Women athletes
National Men's Team
Team Requirements – must meet requirements in all areas below
- 99% Attendance at regular planned training
- Sign and adhere to Code of Conduct
- BMI: min 20.5
- Men – “A” athlete – one of the following between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of current year:
- Top 30 World Championships
- 1 World Cup Point
- Top 10 World Jr. Championships
- Men – “B” Athlete – one of the following between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of current year:
- 1×80% of top 3 at North American Continental Cup
- 2x top 30 Overseas Continental Cup
- Top 30 World Jr. Championships
National Women's Team
Team Requirements – must meet requirements in all areas below
- 99% Attendance at regular planned training
- Sign and adhere to Code of Conduct
- BMI: min 20.5
- Women – one of the following between Nov. 1 and Oct. 31 of current year:
- Top 10 World Jr. Championships
- 3x Top 20 World Cup
- Top 20 World Championships
Nordic Combined
National Development Team – Nordic Combined
- Must be at least 16 years old
- BMI: min 22.5
- Automatic inclusion on National Development team if achieve one of (must also meet technical and dryland requirements):
- Top 4 at Jr. North Americans
- 1 Continental Cup Point
- Top 35 at World Jr. Championships
- Top Canadian and within 85% of top 3 average at Springer competition in Sr. Class (K90).
- SJ Technical – must get at least 8/10 on each element
- Proper inrun position: 1-10
- IMO: 1-10
- Flight Position: 1-10
- Landing: 1-10
- Take-off: 1-10
- Roller IMO (caught): 1-10
- Dryland – must get pass all elements
- Agility test (Delorme goalie test)
- Flexibility test – sit n’reach (-10 min.): P/fail

- XC Ski (one or the other depending on season of test)
- Roller Ski: 5km – minimum time set by coach (dependant on Roller Ski quality / speed and conditions at time of test)
- Snow Ski: 5km in 14:00 or 14:30 (condition adjusted)
- XC Technical – must get at least 9/10 on each element
- Offset Skate Left Side: 1-10
- Offset Skate Right Side: 1-10
- 1 Skate: 1-10
- 2 Skate: 1-10
National Team – Nordic Combined
- Minimum 16 yrs old
- BMI: min 22.5
- “A” Team
- 1 World Cup Point
- Top ½ of field at World Championships or Olympics
- “B” Team
- 1 Continental Cup point
- Top 20 at Jr. World Championships
Travel / Competition Entry Eligibility
General
- Meet minimum international standards for entry
- Meet NSO standards for entry if different (higher) from international standards
- Follow Code of Conduct and / or Athlete Charter
- Meet teacher expectations for school work and grades
- Pay required fees and costs
- Meet training requirements
- Meet Team requirements and criteria
- Coaches have final say on which athletes will be entered into any and all competitions
- If any of above requirements are not met athlete may be disallowed from travel or sent home from travel.
Competition Specific Entry Criteria
July, Sept FIS Cups / Continental Cups – Men
- Open to: National Team through to Provincial Development Team
- Priority for entry to fill quota spots:
- Top International ranked athlete from National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team
- National ‘A’ team
- National ‘B’ team
- National Development team to Provincial Development team based on Canadian Ranking List order
July Continental Cups (European) – Women
- Open to: National Team through to Provincial Development Team
- Priority for entry to fill quota spots:
- Top International ranked athlete from National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team
- Top 3 athletes from following (all entered athletes must have met criteria to be within 90% of the top 3 competitors in 3 of 4 local competitions immediately prior to Continental Cup Competition):
- National team athletes
- National Development team to Provincial Development team based on Canadian Ranking List (CRL) order
Winter Continental Cups and World Cups – Women
- Open to: National Team through to Provincial Development Team
- Priority for entry to fill quota spots:
- Top International ranked athlete from National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team
- Top 3 athletes from following (all entered athletes must have met criteria to be within 90% of the top 3 competitors in 3 of 4 local competitions immediately prior to Continental Cup Competition):
- National team athletes
- National Development team to Provincial Development team based on Canadian Ranking List (CRL) order
August Grand Prix – NC
- 1Open to National Team and National Development team only
- Must have min. one COC Point
- Team trial to be held in July in PC UT
- Final decision one selection based on PC team trial and coach’s discretion with CRL ranking taken into consideration.
Winter Continental Cups – NC
- Western US & Canada 4 to 8 athletes based on coaches decision and budget considerations
- Open to National Team, National Development team, and Provincial Teams
- Must have at least 1 COC point
- Place within 92% of top Canadian at trial comp to be held at early snow camp
- Final team based on coach’s discretion using CRL, trial comp, and COC point requirement.
European, Asian, Eastern US & Canada (anytime we have to get on a plane) (up to 4 athletes)
- Must have at least 1 COC point
- Place within 95% of top Canadian at trial comp held at early snow camp
- Place within 95% of points in Western COC
- Final team based on coach’s discretion using CRL, trial comp, and COC point requirement.
- The exception to these above COC criteria would be if the COC is part of a pre WJC (or similar) camp. In this instance coach’s discretion is final decider.
Winter World Cups – NC Up to 2
- Open to National Team and National Development only
- Must have a COC point
- Final decision one selection based on PC team trial and coach’s discretion with CRL ranking taken into consideration.
August European Grand Prix World Cup – SJM – Eligibility:
- Top National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team member as ranked from the July European competitions
- Second athlete may be sent as funding and coaches discretion allow
August FIS and Continental Cup – SJM
- Open National Team to Provincial Team
- Up to 4 entries, in order of priority:
- 2nd ranked National Team member
- 3rd and 4th ranked National Development team member (4th athlete only if 2nd athlete sent to European Grand Prix World Cup)
- Any remaining National Development team members in order of rank
- 2 best athletes from Provincial team based on qualifier competition
Winter FIS Cups – SJM
- 1Open National Team to Provincial Team
- Up to 4 entries, in order of priority:
- 2nd ranked National Team member
- 3rd and 4th ranked National Development team member according to CRL (4th athlete only if 2nd athlete sent to European Grand Prix World Cup)
- Any remaining National Development team members in order of CRL rank
- 2 best athletes from Provincial team based on qualifier competition
Winter Continental Cups – SJM
- Open to National Team and National Development Team only in order of priority:
- Top National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team member as of CRL
- 2nd ranked National Team member as of CRL
- 3rd and 4th ranked National Development team member according to CRL
Winter World Cups – SJM
- Open to National Team and National Development Team only in order of priority:
- Top National ‘A’ or ‘B’ team member as of CRL
- 2nd ranked National Team member as of CRL
- 3rd and 4th ranked National Development team member according to CRL
- Must have COC points
Jan / Feb World Jr. Championships:
SJM – 2 or 3 athletes as entry quota, budget, and athlete quality allow (no guarantee of taking 3 athletes)
- National Team ‘A’ through to Provincial Team
- Selection priority:
- Athlete with World cup points
- Athlete with Continental Cup points
- Top 2 ranked CRL athlete(s)
- Top 10 at Youth Olympics
- Youth Olympics named athlete
- Team event entry is ideal and may require use of NC jumpers
SJW – 4 athlete entries as entry quota, budget, and athlete quality allow (no guarantee of taking 4 athletes)
- National Team ‘A’ through to Provincial Team
- Selection priority:
- Athlete with Continental Cup points
- 2 or 3 athletes from 4 youth Olympics qualification process – each athlete must have finished within 90% of top 2 athletes
- Athlete with North American Continental Cup Point
- Top Canadian at North American Jr. Competition if they are within 95% of the average of the top three finishers
Nordic Combined – up to 4 athletes, bottom 2 athletes (3rd and 4th ranked on team) will be 100% self funded
- Open to National Team through to Provincial Team
- Selection priority
- 2nd Canadian at North American Jr. Competition assuming within 95% of top Canadian (if first World Jr. Championships then athlete can be 90% of top Canadian)
- 3rd and 4th athlete by invite – if they are within % shown in part iii – coaches discretion
