2014 Olympian Matthew Rowley Announces Retirement

2014 Olympian Matthew Rowley Announces Retirement

November 13, 2015 News

Matthew Rowley, a veteran of the Canadian National Ski Jumping Team, has announced his retirement from the sport.

Matthew started ski jumping 15 years ago at age 7, getting his start through Winsport’s multi-sport summer camp and immediately fell in love with ski jumping. “Pushing the boundaries of what can be done on skis, experiencing the rush of jumping and the excitement of competing for my country kept me motivated,” says Rowley.

Chronic knee problems finally sidelined the 2014 Olympian and caused him to reevaluate his priorities. Rowley is currently working for Smith as a field service rep where he helps athletes market themselves to support their Olympic dreams. “I have a smile on my face every day,” he says of his experience working for Smith.\

Rowley added, “A sincere thank you to Calgary-based Rogers Insurance for giving me the financial freedom to pursue my sport dreams and recognize my potential. They treated me like family and wanted me to succeed. I will always have fond memories of the Rogers team”.

Matthew wishes success for the rest of the Canadian Ski Jumping team at the Winter games in Korea 2018 and fully expects Canada to bring home a medal. He would also like to see Calgary host the 2026 Olympics and would give back by volunteering at the event. Rowley concluded,“who knows – maybe I’ll forerun the event and show the next generation how the old guys did it”.
