Canada’s Abigail Strate soars to top 10 Ski Jumping World Cup Finish
Feb 26th, 2022
Hinzenbach AUT- In her first competition since the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Abigail Strate jumped to a personal best ninth place in the FIS World Cup Competition on the HS90 in Hinzenbach Austria.
After a first-round jump of 83m, Strate would sit in third place going into the final round. For the first time in her career, she would start the final round amongst the biggest names in the sport. In the sport of Ski Jumping, the starting order of the final round is determined by the first round’s results with the best athletes going last. “I actually felt really chill at the top, I wasn’t freaking out or anything, I used to have a lot of issues with competing but I felt great today,” said the Olympic Bronze medalist. “The past few weeks I’ve started to believe I can do some great things in this sport, so it felt like I belonged up there”
With her second-round jump of 78m, Strate would finish ninth with a total of 202.4 points, and achieve Canada’s best individual women’s World Cup result since Taylor Henrich’s third-place finish in 2015.
“After coming off such a high in Beijing it helped my performance and confidence level a lot, I was able to have two good jumps in the competition that we medaled in, so ideally this all caries forward and I’m able to end it on a high note”
Abigail Strate was part of the historic Bronze medal-winning team in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics alongside Alexandria Loutitt, Matthew Soukup, and Mackenzie Boyd Clowes.
The result from today proves that Strate is finding her form and confidence on the hill, and after getting a glimpse of the World Cup podium has now shifted her focus from competing amongst the best, to becoming the best.
Teammate and Olympic Bronze medalist Alexandria Loutitt would finish 21st in the event, with a total of 184.9 points. Slovenia’s Ursa Bogataj would take the top spot on the podium with 249.7 points, with her teammate Nika Kriznar taking silver and Austria’s Lisa Eder in third.
Natalie Eilers and Nicole Maurer would be unable to break the top 40 threshold to compete in the competition and would finish qualification in 41st, and 45th place. Tomorrow all four women will compete again.
