Canada’s Abigail Strate Soars to First Career World Cup Podium
Hinterzarten, Germany.- Abigail Strate finished her day in third place claiming her first ever FIS Ski Jumping World Cup podium on the HS111.
After a breakthrough season last year, Strate would head into this season with multiple World Cup top 10 results, Continental Cup wins, and of course the historic bronze medal from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the mixed team event. This season Strate has her eyes locked onto the top three steps of the coveted Ski Jumping World Cup podium.
“These things happen when you least expect them! After a bit of trouble, figuring out the rhythm of the hill in the training rounds, I am glad I was able to put two and two together when it counted. I like this hill, and I am very much looking forward to more ski jumping tomorrow.” -said Strate.
After an excellent start to the season and several fourth place finishes Strate, the Calgary AB native knew she was on track to fight with the best in the world. Continuing to add to the accomplishment of the young Canadian Ski Jumping Team.
Strate’s first jump of 103 m / 115.7 points would place her in third just 20.6 points off the leading jump set by Germany’s Katherina Althaus. In Ski Jumping, the points from both first and second round jumps are combined to give the overall score. Going into the second round, Strate would know she would need to improve to ensure a spot in the top three.
Despite the pressure riding on her shoulders, the young athlete would be able to rise to the occasion and fly 106.5 m / 120.6 points, combining for 236.3 points total propelling her to her first ever career podium.
Germany’s Katherina Althaus would win with 258.8 points, second would go to Slovenia’s Ema Klinec with 237.6 points, while Bronze was reserved for Strate.
After the closing of her home training site at Winsports Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, AB. Strate was forced to move to Slovenia, where she now spends up to 10 months a year living and training alongside her teammates. The result is truly a testament to her hard work, dedication and proves that Canada has a place amongst the strongest nations in the sport.
