Calgary police recruits host Canadian ski jumpers

Calgary Police Service recruits will be putting their fitness to the test as they host members of the Canadian National Ski Jumping Team during their regular fitness training.

On Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, five athletes representing Ski Jumping Canada will be participating in some unparalleled cross training with police recruits in an effort to mix up their training regimes and experience the camaraderie that exists in policing.  

Training alongside national level athletes is also a unique opportunity for CPS recruits who get to see first-hand the motivation, perseverance and commitment these athletes have dedicated to their sport. All CPS recruits are also required to have a high level of physical fitness and understand the great deal of effort that is required to maintain that level of fitness.

“Fitness is an important part of officer safety,” said Corinne Swirsky, CPS Physical Training Instructor. “Our goal is not only for our officers to reach a certain threshold of physical fitness, but also to teach them skills so they can maintain their fitness and wellness in order to have long careers and remain safe on the street.”

As ski jumping is primarily an individual sport, this cross training activity allows the athletes to experience the respect and teamwork that is necessary within a police recruit class.  

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the national team athletes to experience a different style of training in an incredible environment. The sense of camaraderie amongst the officers is a testament to their training and dedication,” said Tom Reid, President, Ski Jumping Canada. “The amazing team spirit is what I hope the athletes will take away from this experience.”

As a part of their training, all recruits participate in fitness activities that test their strength and endurance in a variety of scenarios. As well, recruits are required to successfully pass the Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (A-PREP), before they are hired.
